National Conference of the Women in Engineering Programs and Advocates Network (WEPAN) in Lake Buena Vista, Florida
Project staff presented a paper Theory and Practice in Recruiting Women for STEM Careers. The paper summarized a review of existing literature on practices currently recommended to recruit women into STEM careers, and on the career development and gender theories on which these are based. (A copy of this paper is available here.) The session was well attended and most attendees (n = 31) requested a copy of our report Three Theories in Career Development and Choice.

2007
ATE PI Conference in Washington, DC
The project’s booth was an overwhelming success. Even though we were scheduled in the last time slot on the last day of the conference, people lined up three deep (and at times even more) for the entire 2 hours to inquire about the project. We received 26 additional requests for the Three Theories report and for the URL of the WEPAN paper.

Edmonds Community College’s 3rd annual Women’s Conference in Lynnwood, WA
The project shared an exhibition table with the Materials Science and Technology Program. The exhibit included the project poster developed for last fall’s ATE PI Conference as well as display copies of the report Three Theories in Career Development and Choice and the paper Theory and Practice in Recruiting Women for STEM Careers. 125 people, primarily women, attended the conference.

National Conference of the Women in Engineering Programs and Advocates Network (WEPAN) pre-conference workshop in St. Louis, Missouri
Project staff presented a PowerPoint on the survey they conducted in February concerning the recruitment practices of women into STEM careers as reported by ATE programs active in the 2006-2007 academic year. The session also allowed participants to network with each other and share and discuss information that they have gathered in working with their own program.

We can do anything we want if we stick to it long enough.
